Copyright
I got into a somewhat heated discussion yesterday when I mentioned to a friend that a client had sent me pictures he lifted off someone else’s website to be included in the website I’m building for him. I was told that I was splitting hairs and looking for excuses not to do the work. Nothing could be further from the truth. I want to get this site done and done right. Stealing intellectual property is not my idea of doing it right.
I found this article titled “10 Big Myths about Copyright Explained” Check it out… it’s a good source of information for those who are copyright challenged.
I would like to especially point out Myth number 1 “If it doesn’t have a copyright notice, it’s not copyrighted.” That was the argument that was used to tell me that I’m wrong. As a former professional photographer, I’m intimately familiar with this. It’s NOT TRUE! The photograph is copyrighted the instant the photographer took the photograph.
